VIA Statement on The Loss of One of our Coworkers
Monday, March 26, 2018
From: Ethan Long, Executive Director
Over the weekend, we heard some sad and tragic news affecting our VIA community. On Saturday night, Amanda Bates, one of the Instructors at our James C. Hormel School, was shot and killed. This is shocking news for all of us, and we are working hard to absorb it, to support each other in our grief, and at the same time to keep up the essential services we provide for our families.
Amanda was an amazing person, very well loved by all of her co-workers and by our whole VIA community. We’ve been hearing from the families of the students she worked with just how much her kindness and compassion meant to them.
Our hearts go out to all of her family and friends. Please know that we are grieving with you.
The work we do at VIA is essential and it must go on – Amanda would certainly want that. Her passion for what we do and her commitment to our whole VIA family was extremely strong. The qualities that we bring to work with us every day – dedication, compassion, and support for each other – are also the ones that will help us through this.
On behalf of everyone at VIA, I’d like to thank the members of our extended community who have reached out to us today – from our local public school partners who have sent counselors to be with us, to our incredible families who have been sending us food and emotional support.
