On the Calendar:

April 2 — World Autism Awareness Day.  Kicks off April – Autism Awareness Month.

April 9 Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s.  12:00 – 8:00 pm at Barracks Road Shopping Center. This annual event benefits the Virginia Institute of Autism. Come for a free cone, and bring your change, or a few bucks, to benefit autism services in our region.

April 13 – Run for Autism 5K – 7:00  am Kid’s Race, 8:00 am 5K. Charlottesville High School.  Run / Walk / Volunteer / Donate at runforautism5k.org.

April 19th Parent Power Hour – 9:00-10:15am, VIA Outpatient Behavioral Services, 3500 Remson Court. Come enjoy valuable conversation and support with other VIA parents and grandparents.

Looking Ahead …

May 8 — STAR  Community Focus Group–5:30-7:00 pm, King Charles Room, English Inn, 2000 Morton Drive (catered food and beverages served).  UVA’s STAR Initiative seeks input about the needs and priorities of people with autism and their families.The Curry School of Education “Supporting Transformative Autism Research” Initiative collaborates with VIA and others to drive innovative research and models for care, support, and education. May 11 — Autism Speaks Town Hall on Adult Services–8:30am-12:30pm, Flo and Tony Guzman Community Center (Faison Center), 1701 Byrd Ave, Richmond. VIA Adult Services coordinator Noelle Funk will be featured along with other panelists discussing critical resources that impact some of the most important facets of adult life, including employment, housing, post-secondary education, and community living. For adults with autism preparing for (or having made) the transition to adulthood, family members, school staff, service providers, and policy makers. Refreshments will be served. May 17Silent Disco Dance at Johnson Elementary School, 5:00-7:00.  For VIA students and clients age 11-18 – a great, sensory-friendly opportunity for fun and socializing. Everyone gets headphones for dancing at their own volume, while those who don’t want music can snack and mingle and talk.  VIA staff is planning a dress drive, and hair and makeup before the dance.  We are asking parents to sign up to bring either cups, water, chips, plates, juice, gluten-free munchies, or other snacks. Please email your child’s teacher to RSVP and sign up for contributions.
