What’s Going On at VIA

This Month’s Calendar:


November 6 — Open House of VIA’s Center for Adolescent and Adult Autism Services- 491 Hillsdale Drive, Charlottesville 22901 from 5:30 PM-7:30 PM. Our families and closest friends are being invited to meet our architect and Community Advisory Board member, Cathy Purple Cherry, and tour the new building. Cathy will speak about the plans and vision for the facility, as well as share with us her experiences as a mother of an adult son on the spectrum, and as a designer of unique spaces that serve special needs populations. Light refreshments will be served, with a presentation at 6:30 PM and tours of the facility throughout the evening.

November 16 — Virginia Autism Hope Summit- UVA Inn at Darden. Conference and Events Center from 8:30 AM-3:30 PM. Please join us for the First Annual Virginia Autism Hope Summit at the University of Virginia! This event is for families, self-advocates, friends, and service providers in the Central Virginia Community. For more information, please contact Fay Painter at frp4qc [at] virginia [dot] edu.

November 19 — Autism Goes to College FREE Screening- 2908 W Cary St, Richmond, VA at 23221 at 7:00 PM. SpectrumWise is sponsoring a free screening of “Autism Goes to College” at the Byrd Theater. Suggested donation of $5 with all proceeds going to the Autism Society of Central Virginia.

November 22- Kids Night Out- 1414 Westwood Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901 from 5:30 -7:45 PM. VIA will offer free respite care for James C. Hormel School students and Outpatient Behavioral Services students on November 22nd from 5:30PM – 7:45PM at the James C. Hormel School, 1414 Westwood Rd.  VIA employees will provide a safe and fun environment with adequate staffing to allow children to participate in recreational activities.  Students will eat dinner before, or parents can send in food with their child. Please bring any additional supplies needed for your child. Drop off is at the main entrance to VIA. Prompt pickup is necessary to continue these events.  SPACE IS LIMITED. Preference will be given to families with little or no support for respite opportunities.

The event is free, but there is a suggested donation of $15. Registration information will be posted soon.

Looking Ahead …

December 5 — Special Needs Trusts and Guardianship workshop- 1414 Westwood Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901 from 9:00-11:00 AM. Please join us for this FREE workshop for parents of children with disabilities. If you wish to attend please RSVP to Hillary Nagel at hnagel [at] viaschool [dot] org.

December 12 — Holiday Music Extravaganza – 1414 Westwood Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901 from 8:45-11:00 AM. Please join us for a holiday celebration of student art, music, and fun, and the possible appearance of a certain bearded, jolly old elf.

The event will begin at 8:45 with a meet-and-greet with Director of Education Services Jessica Doucette.

There will be rotating groups between music, African drumming, and an art exhibit from 9:00-10:00 AM.

Pictures with Santa will take place in the conference room from 10:00-10:30 AM.
