Association for Behavior Analysis International 37th Annual Convention

The Virginia Institute of Autism staff members will be attending and presenting at the ABAI International Convention in Denver over Memorial Day weekend. Topics VIA staff will be presenting include assessment and treatment of vocal stereotypy and long-term outcomes for individuals with autism. Convention attendees are professors, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, parents, and consultants in the field. ABAI welcomes all those interested in the philosophy, science, education, and teaching of behavior analysis.

Real Life With Jennifer Till: Autism Spectrum

In 1943 a 10 year old from the small town of Forest, Mississippi known in the medical journals as Donald T., or Case #1, was the first child diagnosed with autism, or more correctly Autism Spectrum Disorder. At the time, it was thought to be exceedingly rare with less than a dozen known cases. And while we know much more about ASD today, it is what we don’t know that continues to frustrate researchers, practitioners and families about a condition that affects about one of every 110 children born.

VIA Autism Speakers Series welcomes Dr. Gina Green

Respected autism researcher and author Dr. Gina Green, BCBA-D, presented to over 60 attendees at the first VIA Autism Speakers Series event on April 28, 2011. Dr. Green spoke about how consumers, practitioners, and funding agencies can learn to distinguish reliable scientific evidence from other sources of information about interventions for ASD. Sponsored by the Virginia Institute of Autism and the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center, this series explores a variety of autism-related topics. Educators, families, students, pediatricians, early intervention specialists, child psychologists, psychiatrists and others wanting to learn more about autism are encouraged to attend. This series is free of charge and open to the public. The next lecture is schedule for June 7, 2011. Dr. Peter Gerhardt will be presenting, “Adolescents and Adults with Autism: Applied Behavior Analysis & Evidence-based Practice in Support of Competence and Quality of Life.” Registration is required at www.viaschool.org.

VIA welcomes Congressman Robert Hurt

Congressman Robert Hurt representing the 5th District of Virginia visited the Virginia Institute of Autism (VIA) on April 28, 2011. The Congressman learned more about the diverse needs of children and adults on the autism spectrum. Congressman Hurt and VIA Executive Director, Dr. Ethan Long, discussed the importance of intensive, individualized, evidence-based education and treatment and the advantages of thesuccessful public/private partnership developed at VIA. “Congressman Hurt visited each of our classrooms and spent time interacting one-on-one with our students and staff,” explains Ethan Long, Ph.D., BCBA-D. “He took a genuine interest in learning more about how VIA employs evidence-based practices to help our students, families and fellow educators better serve persons with autism.”

VIA Autism Speakers Series welcomes Dr. Peter Gerhardt

Dr. Peter Gerhardt presented, “Adolescents and Adults with Autism: Applied Behavior Analysis & Evidence-based Practice in Support of Competence and Quality of Life” toover 40 attendees at the VIA Autism Speakers Series event on June 7, 2011. Dr. Gerhardt spoke about how applied behavior analysis can be used to teach meaningful, life skills that help adolescents and adults with autism achieve happiness and safety in their communities. Dr. Gerhardt spent the day at VIA touring the classrooms and collaborating on the curriculum. The next lecture is schedule for September 22, 2011. Dr. Dennis Reid, BCBA-D will be presenting, "Evidence-Based Strategies for Promoting Enjoyment among People with Autism." Registration is required at www.viaschool.org.
