On the April Calendar…Autism Awareness Month:
Events to celebrate Autism Awareness month are still coming onto the schedule. Please check back frequently to see what’s coming.
April 4 — Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day. Our great friends at B & J Charlottesville are once again providing free cone day as an opportunity to showcase VIA and to raise awareness for autism. Stop by any time on April 4th to have some ice cream, and meet some of our staff and families.
April 5 – (1st Wed every month) - Autism Support Group, for those with a loved one newly diagnosed. C’ville Coffee, 1301 Harris St., 9:00am-10:15am.
April 9 – 10 – Magician / Autism Rights Advocate Cody Clark performs at the Shenandoah Fringe Festival – Cranberry’s Grocery and Eatery, 7 S New St, Staunton. April 9 @ 4:20, April 10 @ 11am. Tickets $10 with the purchase of a $5 Fringe Button. More info at www.shenfringe.com.
April 13 — Sensory Friendly Science Museum of Virginia – A free, sensory-friendly, evening at the museum, from 5:30 to 8:00. Minds of all Kinds offers smaller crowds, but the same big fun. Includes regular museum exhibits, as well as films on national parks and on stars. Info on this page, including a link to ticket info.
April 10-16 — VIA at Tom Tom. VIA is participating in several events at this year’s Tom Tom Founders Festival. Check back for more information as the schedule develops.
Friday, April 14: Tom Tom Luncheon discussion “Founding a City with Resilience” - 12:00 noon, Fleurie. A panel with VIA participants Ethan Long, David Gordon, Peggy Halliday and Mark Lorenzoni, joined by Mike Porath, founder of the disability resources website The Mighty.
Saturday and Sunday, April 15 – 16: VIA in TOM TOM tents in Lee Park. Festival atmosphere prevails with music, and food, and displays by innovative organizations building better communities. Visit VIA from noon to 5 on Saturday, and from 2:30 to 5:00 on Sunday.
April 21 - (3rd Fri every month) - Autism Support Group, for those looking for support & resource info. C’ville Coffee, 1301 Harris St., 9:00am-10:15am.
April 22 — RUN FOR AUTISM 5K. Our annual race – big opportunity to raise funds and raise awareness for VIA. Register and find more information at www.runforautism5k.org.
Participants and volunteers are invited to join us after the race at Kardinal Hall on Preston Ave. for our Run for Autism 5K AFTER PARTY! 10:00 am — ???
April 26 – UVA Autism Symposium, 10:00 – 3:00, Kaleidoscope Room, Newcomb Hall, University of Virginia. Hosted by the Curry School of Education and the UVA Brain Institute. Keynote Speaker, Ron Suskind, Journalist and Author. VIA is a presenting partner. RSVP by April 19.
April 27 — Sensory-Friendly Performance of The Firebird. Charlottesville Ballet special performance at 12 noon in the Dickinson Theater at PVCC. More info here.
